Food and wine

With everything from street food to high end dining, basement bars to rooftop venues, Perth has become a city that rivals its east coast neighbours. Visitors are spoilt for choice, with Perth having more restaurants per capita than any other capital city in Australia, with WA’s amazing array of fresh produce on show, such as black truffles, marron, lobster and more. Then, there’s a selection of food trucks, farmers markets and hawkers markets, which take over the city and its urban hubs throughout the year.

Optus Stadium

Perth’s brand new state-of-the-art 60,000 seat Optus Stadium opened to applause in 2018, and has since hosted sell-out crowds across sport and entertainment events. With two 340sqm super screens – the largest stadium screens in the Southern Hemisphere – fans won’t miss a beat of the on-ground action, and after dark, fans can be entertained by the largest sports-lighting installation in the world. Situated alongside Perth’s iconic Swan River, the stadium will host several major events in 2019, including the Rugby League State of Origin on June 23, and Bledisloe Cup on August 10.

Day trips

Few cities have such an impressive range of activities at their doorstep. Within an hour of Perth’s central business district you can be taking a #quokkaselfie on Rottnest Island, tantalising your tastebuds in the Swan Valley or Perth Hills wine regions, swimming with wild dolphins at Rockingham, cruising the coastal city of Mandurah’s scenic canals, or discovering maritime history, a World Heritage listed prison and a bohemian lifestyle in the eclectic port city of Fremantle.

Rottnest Island

Famous for its tranquil waters, secluded bays and resident marsupial, the quokka, Rottnest Island is a perfect day out. Catch a ferry from Perth, Fremantle or Hillarys and on arrival hire a bike and explore the island’s 63 beautiful beaches and 20 bays. Enjoy lunch at one of the island’s cafes and restaurants, then spend the afternoon enjoying the crystal clear ocean. The island playground is set to receive a major boost to its accommodation offering when glamping resort, Discovery Eco Village Rottnest Island, opens in early-2019.

A short walk from the CBD with superb views of the city skyline and Swan River, Kings Park is rich in Aboriginal and European history and has more than 3,000 species of WA’s unique flora. Visitors can dine at one of the park’s restaurants or cafes, enjoy a picnic, check out local artwork at Aspects, marvel at a 750-year old boab tree, and in season, watch a movie under the stars at the outdoor cinema or see a performance.

Coastal comforts

Home to 19 pristine metropolitan beaches, it’s easy to find your own slice of white sand to relax and enjoy one WA’s famous Indian Ocean sunsets. While surfers head to Scarborough and Trigg for the waves, swimmers looking for calmer waters can cool off at Cottesloe or one of the more sheltered northern beaches such as Mettam’s Pool. Several of Perth’s beachside locations have undergone major upgrades, including Scarborough, City Beach and Fremantle.
